New London has an extensive and colorful maritime history and was an important whaling, fishing and trading port.
Today, seaside activities continue to form and bolster the city. Waterfront Park, located in New London, is a new port and destination for luxury cruise lines, grandiose tall ships and visitors. In addition, New London is also the long-time home of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a U.S. Naval Base.
Captain's Walk is New London's retail center. The town center also features several historic and cultural landmarks, including the birthplace of playwright Eugene O'Neill, the Garde Arts Center and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. New London is also the gorgeous setting for some of Connecticut's grandest outdoor festivals, including tall ships parades and the yearly Harvard-Yale crew races.
From New London, visitors and locals can take the Block Island Ferry to visit pristine beaches on the close by Rhode Island summer destination. Also offering summertime fun are the three town beaches and Ocean Beach Park.
New London's educational system includes quality public schools, private schools and numerous institutes of higher education. Also included are the U.S Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College and Mitchell College.
