Washington, CT

The awe inspiring beauty of Washington's landscape never disappoints one traveling through the rolling hills, high plateaus and valleys next to river bends that wind through the 38 square miles of countryside. Washington offers a impressive experience on foot, by car or bicycle.

Nestled in the foothills of Berkshire Mountains, on 80 miles from New York City, Washington has been a popular vacation destination since the 19th century. Attracting the likes of robber barons and industrialists to modern day gen X's and millennials. Named in honor of George Washington who frequented a New Preston tavern and other parts of the town's prestigious history, Washington dates back to the original, Native American inhabitants who settled on the banks of the Shepaug River 10,000 years ago. Before the arrival of the settlers in 1734, the Wyantenock tribe inhabited the area who sold land the Averill family, for 10 generations the Averill's have remained at the homestead, farming the land, providing one of the most beloved apple orchards in the northeast. The well preserved, historic homes project a cohesive, rural New England graceful charm, reminiscent of the rich history. Many of these homes were part of the Underground Railroad where bounty hunters were thrown off the trail of runaway slaves. In 1925, Ehrick Rossiter, a local renowned architect donated 100 acres along the Shepaug River, forming the foundation of the Steep Rock Land Trust which today holds land and conserved easements protecting more than 2,700 acres in Washington. That respect for maintaining the rural, natural integrity of Washington has provided numerous hiking and cycling trails and abundant natural resources to enjoy.
Properties in Washington command an average price tag of more than a million dollars but this is not to say there is a lack of availability or appeal of more modest homes.
Washington is comprised of five charming villages full of character, just waiting to be explored.

The Washington Green
The centerpiece of this New England Village is home to a library, private boarding school, amazing inn and spa, two museums and a beautiful collection of famed architect Erick Rossiter's historic homes.

Washington Depot
Washington Depot was once a station stop on the Shepaug Railroad and is now a charming hamlet with many interesting shops, restaurants, galleries and services, all one of a kind along Route 47, Titus Road, River Road and Bryan Plaza which features the stately Bryan Memorial Town Hall. There are miles of hiking trails throughout the village's beautiful Steep Rock Nature Preserve.

New Preston
A charming area of 18 th and 19 th century buildings that once surround mills powered by New Preston Falls. This area is now a haven for shoppers and weekend visitors. The scenic narrow winding road north of the village center, encircles Lake Waramaug and leads to vineyards, inns and amazing views.

Marbledale
Down the road from New Preston on the main road between New Milford and Litchfield lies Marbledale. This area is known for its cluster of captivating shops housed in restored homes and barns. At the heart of the village lies a red brick church founded in 1764.

Woodville
The home of the Washington Montessori School, the school has given the community a state-of-the-art theater for all kinds of productions. The village offers a slower paced quiet country life.

Lake Waramaug, named after a chief, the 2 nd largest natural lake in the state, tis the jewel in the crown of Washington. Kent, Warren, the Lake Waramaug Country Club, a state park and some of the town's finest estates border the shore.

The 4,000 residents of Washington, include such notables as comedian Conan O'Brien, actress Christine Baransky, artist Jim Dine, magazine editor Graydon Carter, actress Marsha Mason, musician James Taylor. People who could chose to live anywhere are drawn to Washington's culturally rich quality of lifestyle.
