The town of Bridgewater, Connecticut is situated in the southwest corner of the state and was originally settled by Samuel Clark as part of New Milford.

Bridgewater has retained its early small business and residential atmosphere. Early on, enterprises such as dairy farming and hat making made inroads in the area. Captain William D. Burnham, founder of the American Hawaiian Steamship Company was also rooted in Bridgewater. His bequests brought about a school and library that bear his name. Bridgewater is part of the Regional School District 12. The Burnham Elementary School is located in Bridgewater. It enrolls around 140 students in grades K-6. The school has received a Greatschools rating of 10 out of 10 and it has been noted that the environment is that of an exclusive private school. Older children attend the Shepaug Valley Middle and High Schools. The high school educates around 330 students and has received a Greatschools rating of 7.
