First settled in 1700, Salem is located in southeast Connecticut. Salem occupies about 30 square miles and was incorporated in 1819.

First settled in 1700, Salem is located in southeast Connecticut. Salem occupies about 30 square miles and was incorporated in 1819. Originally called Paugwonk, Salem was made up of lands from Lyme, Montville and Colchester.

Salem was originally a prosperous wheat growing community. Today, Salem is growing at a steady rate, but has maintained a quiet rural charm due to its distance from major thoroughfares. Its lovely country side is dotted with quaint homes.

An abundance of recreational activities are available in Salem including sports leagues, tennis courts, athletic fields, a private beach, boating and fishing.
