Torrington

The largest community in Litchfield County, Torrington, is enjoying a strong revitalization of its downtown and retail shopping districts.

Torrington's heart is its downtown, where it features new landscaping, sidewalks and paths at Coe Park. The Warner Theatre, a 1,704-seat art-deco theater that opened in 1931 as a first-run movie palace by Warner Brothers Studios, is now home to The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, where it trains world-class ballet dancers.

Students can attend one of five elementary schools, and continue on to the middle and high schools, where the district offers a full assortment of services for all grades.

A vocational technical school, Oliver Wolcott Technical High School serves students from surrounding towns.

Torrington has many thrilling cultural and seasonal activities. Two weeks before the Christmas holiday, there is an enchanting Christmas Village open to the public at no cost. A Summer Arts Festival is hosted every year for a week.

Burr Pond State Park provides picnic tables, hiking trails and a swimming hole, and John A. Minetto State Park has cross-country skiing trails for wintertime and a fishing pond.

Wildlife sanctuary with over 60 acres, Indian Lookout offers a stunning display of mountain laurel, which is the Connecticut state flower. Many residents enjoy the numerous parks the city has to offer.

The educational climate index chart is based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Socioeconomic Status (SES) measure. Factors in this measure are income, educational achievement and occupation of persons within a ZIP code. Because this measure is based on the population of an entire ZIP code, it may not reflect the nature of an individual school.
