Agawam in Hampden county, Massachusetts

Agawam

The activity-filled city of Agawam, Massachusetts is located in the southwestern portion of the state, bordering Connecticut.

Agawam retained its American Indian name after its sale to William Pynchon in 1636. At that time, the area of Agawam encompassed the modern day towns of Chicopee, Springfield, Longmeadow, and West Springfield. In 1855 the city of Agawam was incorporated and has seen growth in various endeavors ever since. A successful gin distillery operated in the city until prohibition when it turned its attention to apple cider and potato chips, and then resumed distilling after prohibition until its closure in 1938.

Modern-day Agawam is best known for its Six Flags Amusement Park. The park is New England's largest theme park. It features eight roller coasters, many water slides, and a wave pool. Other attractions in Agawam include Robinson State Park – a day-use park offering bike trails, fishing, walking trails, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. The recently-renovated Sand Trap Mini Golf also offers family fun and premium ice cream and soft serve.

Common industries in the city include construction, manufacturing, and retail. The majority of wage earners travel 25 minutes or less to work.

Agawam is home to three elementary schools, all enrolling around 400 students in grades K-4. The middle school educates around 700 children, and the Agawam High School enrolls around 1,300 pupils.

For its convenient location, near to Amtrak and highways, it's low crime rate, and family-oriented activity choices, Agawam has drawn more than 28,000 residents to call the area home.

Education

The educational climate index chart is based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Socioeconomic Status (SES) measure. Factors in this measure are income, educational achievement and occupation of persons within a ZIP code. Because this measure is based on the population of an entire ZIP code, it may not reflect the nature of an individual school.
