The culturally spirited village of Pleasantville, New York, lies within the borders of the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County.
The village became, and has remained, a favorite settling ground for authors. Its quaint atmosphere and close proximity to New York City have drawn the likes of author Dave Barry, Dashiell Hammett, author of The Maltese Falcon, and DeWitt and Lila Bell Wallace, founders of The Reader’s Digest. Although the magazine has long ago moved its headquarters to Chappapqua, it still retains its original address in Pleasantville.
In 2001, the Jacob Burns Film Center was opened. This non-profit cinema delivers independent and documentary films from around the globe. Numerous guest speakers have appeared in the cinema, including Stephen King, Rob Lowe, Oliver Stone, and Woody Allen. The theater’s opening has contributed much to the revitalization of Pleasantville’s downtown area.
The charming bistros, coffee houses, literary influence, untouched arboreal beauty, all no doubt influenced author Chandler Burr of GQ to comment that “If Norman Rockwell’s paintings emitted a scent, this is what it would be.”
The Pleasantville Union Free School District is home to top-rated elementary, middle, and high schools.
Pleasantville certainly lives up to its name, providing its residents with an inspiring and beautiful atmosphere.

The educational climate index chart is based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Socioeconomic Status (SES) measure. Factors in this measure are income, educational achievement and occupation of persons within a ZIP code. Because this measure is based on the population of an entire ZIP code, it may not reflect the nature of an individual school.
The temperature chart displays average high and low temperatures (degrees Fahrenheit) for the months of January and July.
The weather risk chart displays a percent value for a given type of weather risk as compared to the national average. A percent value greater than 100 indicates the area is more prone to risk than the national average; similarly, a value less than 100 indicates the area is less prone.
