Located in Middlesex County; Essex, Connecticut was named "The Perfect Small American Town" in the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die" travel guide.  Essex retains its quaint, early 18th century New England river front charm, sitting on the West bank of the beautiful Connecticut River, 5 miles upstream from Long Island Sound and a short distance from Hartford and New Haven. 

The Essex community is well-known for its distinct Colonial and Federal architecture and has a rich and diverse history that grew in importance with the advent of shipping and ship construction. 

The town of Essex, CT is comprised of three villages:  Essex Village, Centerbrook and Ivoryton with a population of over 6,000 people.  Essex is part of Regional School District #4, which is shared with the neighboring towns of Deep River and Chester.

Essex village has an array of specialty shops, renowned dining including the Griswold Inn and the Black Seal Restaurant, is a popular boating destination with marinas including the Brewster Essex Island Marina and the Essex Yacht Club and offers additional recreational activities including the historic Essex Steam Train, fishing, a nature preserve and bike path.

From the stately antique homes that comprise the three villages of Essex to the charming little shops that line Main Street, to the marinas and renowned restaurants this is small town America at its best.
