Foster's 52 square miles are populated by a little over 4,600 residents. It is well-situated in the northwestern corner of Rhode Island, bordering Connecticut. The town was originally settled in the 17th century by British colonists.

Foster holds the oldest government meeting house of its kind in the United States. The Foster Town House was built in 1796 and is still used as a government building to this day.
