Hopkinton in Washington county, Rhode Island

Hopkinton, RI

The town Hopkinton, Rhode Island is located in the southwestern corner of the state. It borders Connecticut, and is less than 20 minutes away from the Atlantic coastline.

Hopkinton was named after Declaration of Independence signer, Stephen Hopkins. He was governor of the colony of Rhode Island in 1757, the year Hopkinton broke away from nearby Westerly and became an incorporated town.

The town was originally a mill town, and several villages sprang up bearing the name of their local mill. Hope Valley, Rockville, Ashaway, and Bradford are the only recognized villages remaining that have dedicated postal codes.

Hopkinton is part of the Chariho School District. Two elementary schools from the district are located in Hopkinton's villages of Ashaway and Hope Valley.

Wildlife devotees will fall in love with the Arcadia Wildlife Management Area. The 14,000 acre park extends over four towns: Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton, and West Greenwich. In addition, Breakheart Pond provides ample opportunity for fishing and boating.

Two public libraries are available in Hopkinton: The Langworthy Public Library, and the Ashaway Free Library.
