Shannock in Washington county, Rhode Island

Shannock

The mill village of Shannock is located in the towns of Richmond and Charlestown, in the central part of the state. This historic village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Shannock was once a booming mill town. Local millhands published the “Shannock Gab”, a daily newspaper that ran between 1928 and 1932. The newspaper was recently picked up again and will run similar reports of local events.

In its heyday, Shannock was home to many small businesses, a popular train stop, a meeting hall, a few small stores, and at least one large mill. However, times changed after the depression era and the migration of industrial workers dwindled along with the booming growth of the town. In addition, the advent of the automobile decreased train traffic. The Shannock Village Train Station is now a historic building.

Shannock is home to green fields, stone walls, and beautiful views of the Pawcatuck River. The Carter Preserve offers a moderate hiking trail 1.3 miles in length. Hikers are rewarded with a view of the vernal pool which has a platform to overlook the seasonal pond that turns into a meadow in the summertime.

Shannock is part of the Chariho School District. The name “Chariho” was formed by taking the first two letters of each of the major towns it serves: Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton. It has been said that the teachers at this school go above and beyond with their teaching methods.

For those living in Shannock, but commuting to work, Providence is just under 50 minutes away by car. The coastal town of Westerly is just 25 minutes away.

Shannock offers great schools, and a quiet place to enjoy the lush New England countryside.
