New Shoreham, RI

New Shoreham, Rhode Island holds the distinctive title of being the smallest town in the smallest state. It is located on the southeastern shore of Block Island. A small island community of just a little over 1,000 people.

The population soars during the summer months. Droves of visitors from all around the world come to New Shoreham to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, beach roses, and picturesque stone walls. New Shoreham is accessible by the ferries that run from Judith Point, New London, and Newport.

To the delight of the environmentally conscious, the town of New Shoreham has a great interest in preserving the natural heritage of the island. Organizations, such as the Block Island Conservancy, depend on donations to preserve the island's open spaces by means of conservation easements.

Meadows lined with stone walls fill the interior of the island, creating ample photo-ready opportunities. For those wishing to stick closer to the shoreline, there are also a plethora of scenes to delight the eyes. Miles of beaches provide the perfect place for rest and relaxation.

Mohegan Bluffs are located near the Southeast Light. This lighthouse was one of the most endangered lighthouses in American, due to it being only 55 feet to the edge of the cliffs. In 1993, the entire structure was moved back another 245 feet.

The children residing in New Shoreham attend the Block Island School from Kindergarten to grade 12. Island living provides the children with a more hands-on learning experience than many children have on the mainland. Teachers become not only educators, but mentors to many of their students.

For those seeking a beautiful place to spend the summer, or those wishing to experience the uniqueness of island life year-round, New Shoreham is a wonderful choice.
